Initial Ideas

After our photoshoot, we started to consider ideas for storyboarding and film shots and effects. We have decided that the basic narrative of the piece will be about an artist who has lost the girl he loves, and as a result of the culmination of his thoughts and memories about her, he decides to create a painting of her. Toward the end of the piece, he becomes so frustrated by his hopeless situation that he lashes out, destroying everything around him and throws his paint on to the walls around the image, leaving everything in chaos and mess except for the painting. This will create a powerful visual impact as the painting, in its finished state, will remain the only perfect, complete form in the room, the contrast of its perfection being highlighted in the centre of destruction.
We have decided that shots of the woman should be of her walking in the forest (Haigh Hall), a place where both characters used to spend a lot of time together. The shots of the woman will be washed out via the use of a desaturation effect to further illustrate that these shots represent the artist's memories. This could potentially be accompanied by the added emphasis of one particular colour such as red to provide the images with more definition and impact on the viewer. Furthermore, if red was used, there are various connotations associated with the colour that relate to aspects of the narrative, such as identifying the object of the artist's love and passion, yet also to reflect his anger at the fact he has lost her. The red could also indicate danger at revealing and expressing his emotions, foretelling of the explosive ending to the video when the artist destroys his surroundings through anger and frustration.
For the first shot, we have decided to feature the artist walking toward his easel and the blank, white canvas upon it. The shot will be a long shot from behind the back of the easel, so that the blank canvas cannot yet be seen. The next shot will be an over the shouler shot over the artist's shoulder, zooming into the white of the canvas, which fades into the first of his memories of the girl. The slower pace of the action within these opening shots will accompany the slower pace and the softer tempo of the beginning of the song.
We are unsure yet whether or not to reveal the artist's face until the end of the video in order to further create a sense of mystery and anonymity which would indicate that the boy is stalking the girl rather than remembering a past relationship, however, it is debatable as to whether this is actually integral to the overall piece and rather than enhance it, will just create difficulties such as how to hide his face yet still convey the correct amount of emotion throughout the song. It may also convey the wrong message to the audience, because if this piece is meant to be seen from a romantic perspective as if the artist has lost love, portraying him as a potential stalker will skew this image and change the connotations behind the entire video.
